Vedic Hymn to Agni (The Fire God)
The Agni Sūktam (Hymn to Agni) is the very first hymn (Sukta) of the entire Ṛgveda (Mandala 1, Hymn 1), establishing its paramount importance in the Vedic tradition. It comprises nine verses (mantras) and is attributed to the Rishi (seer) Madhuchhandā Vaiśvāmitra.
The hymn is addressed to Agni (Fire God), who is described not just as a physical fire, but as the Purohita (chief priest), the divine Ṛtvij (ritual performer), the Hotā (chief invoker), and the bestower of wealth <Ratnadhātama). Agni serves as the crucial link between humanity and the celestial realm, carrying the offerings to the gods. Chanting this Suktam is traditionally done to invoke prosperity, protection, and wisdom.
